Divers Institute of Technology is dedicated to equipping its students with the skills and knowledge necessary to launch successful careers in commercial diving, and a recent success story published in the Sequim Gazette illustrates that point. Divers Institute graduate Kaleb McCartney, 20, recently spoke with the Gazette about his journey toward a rewarding career in underwater welding with a major underwater salvage company down in the Gulf of Mexico.
While attending community college in Port Angeles, Wash., McCartney took some welding courses and became increasingly interested in a welding career. He eventually researched underwater welding careers and decided he wanted to move in that direction. After earning an associate degree and several welding certificates in community college, his instructors pointed him to DIT, which trains “the best of the best” in the industry.
McCartney described Divers’ seven-month program as “intense” and “a very fast-paced course that covers all aspects of commercial diving in a short period of time.”
After graduating from DIT in March, McCartney said that he immediately had four job offers from Seattle-area underwater salvage companies and others close to the region, but he held out hope for a job in his desired location — the Gulf Coast. Sure enough, he eventually had a phone interview and later an in-person interview that led to his dream job — underwater welding work with Bisso Marine, a Houston-based company that provides key services to the marine and energy industries.
